Plans community initiative to engage emergency responders to educate the public as students return to school
Greenbelt, MD – [September 8, 2025] – NAS PENTAGUN DECK, a non-politically affiliated and non-religious, community-based organization committed to service, leadership, and civic responsibility, has launched a campaign to raise awareness about school shootings and improve public understanding of emergency response strategies in the DMV region.
The initiative is being implemented as students across D.C., Maryland, and Virginia return for the 2025/2026 school year, amid increasing national concern over incidents of school-based violence. The campaign is designed to engage local communities, strengthen partnerships, and promote proactive strategies that ensure children can learn and grow in safe environments.
The NAS PENTAGUN DECK back-to-school safety initiative will focus on:
- Engaging law enforcement, police, fire services, and first responders to educate the public on practical strategies, protocols, and coordinated response plans for potential school shooting situations.
- Raising community awareness about the physical, emotional, and social impacts of school shootings on students, families, educators, and the broader community.
- Hosting a forum that will provide a platform for dialogue between emergency responders, parents, educators, and civic leaders.
- Building partnerships with schools, nonprofit organizations, and community groups to strengthen the overall safety infrastructure in local schools.
- Promoting safety best practices and encouraging community involvement in prevention, preparedness, and support programs.
By engaging emergency responders directly with the public, NAS PENTAGUN DECK aims to increase transparency, trust, and knowledge around how first responders manage potential threats in school settings. The campaign underscores the importance of a coordinated community approach, emphasizing that the safety of students requires collaboration among families, schools, civic leaders, and emergency services.
In line with World Literacy Day (September 8), NAS PENTAGUN DECK emphasizes that students cannot fully embrace the power of learning if they feel unsafe in their classrooms. Ensuring school safety is therefore an essential foundation for literacy, growth, and academic excellence. The initiative reinforces the belief that secure schools empower students to focus on education, creativity, and building a brighter future.
The initiative seeks to reduce risks, promote preparedness, and strengthen resilience across schools in the DMV area.
