DEMOCRACY: Choosing of a leader in a democracy is serious business

By Dr. Christopher Odetunde

Dr. Chris OdetundeChoosing leaders is a serious business. Like a run away locomotive, 2008 year is slowly but steadily rolling away. The battle we fought against the establishment in 2007 is still fresh in 2008. Like little children just looking to get candy but not understanding how candies are produced, we are at it again theorizing instead of seeking practical solutions that can lead to real development.

The President's 'missing ears'

By Reuben Abati

Dr. Reuben AbatiMen Without Ears is the title of a 1984 novel by Nigerian writer, Ifeoma Okoye. With due respect, President Umaru Yar'Adua is beginning to behave like a man without ears. Being without ears refers to a certain obduracy, a peculiar inability to appreciate the truth. I see the same problem in the Yar'Adua presidency, seven months down the line.

By Reuben Abati and Kingsley Osadolor

Mallam Nuhu RibaduMallam Nuhu Ribadu, until recently, Chairman of Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is our Man of the Year, 2007. The context of his selection is worth defining. The year 2007 was a turbulent year for Nigeria in which both the Nigerian people and the government grappled with the issues of transition politics and misgovernance.

Dying of Thirst and the Onanefe Bribe

By Chiemeka Ozumba

His Excellency, Chief James Onanefe Ibori, erstwhile executive governor of Delta State continued to hold control of newspaper front pages the same way he had a vice-grip (no pun intended) hold on Delta state. The dailies are awash with the allegation made by officials of EFCC that he tried to bribe them with $15 million!! My interest is not in the moral of the offer.

The Day Andy Uba Showed Up In My Class

By Uche Nworah

Recently in a Public Relations class I teach, it was Marie’s turn to discuss contemporary public relations and marketing communications issues from around the globe. The students usually trawl various publications and websites in their search for the week’s breaking news in marketing communications, and have in the past found brandrepublic.com, mediaguardian.co.uk, campaign, pr week, and brandchannel.com very useful.
